Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
